Fun Ways to Encourage Reading This Summer

Reading can be a fun activity for students of all ages. Some students may not be fond of the activity, but introducing your child to the idea of reading for fun can change this around. Use their summer break to get them excited about reading using activities like the ones in this post.

Visit the Local Library

A trip to your local library may not sound very exciting, but you can be sure at least a few books will catch your child's attention. Let your child roam the library while freely picking up any books or other material that interests them. Allowing them to pick what they're actually interested in means they're more likely to actually read the material and enjoy it. If the library is hosting a summer reading program, enroll your child to keep them motivated to read even more.

Prepare for Vacation

Before your family trip, get your child's help planning your vacation. Giving them a bit of responsibility will get them more excited to do the research and work. You can assign your child anything from learning about the culture and history of where you're going so that your family is better prepared to reading about different activities you can partake in. Whatever they research, be sure to give their work the attention and recognition they deserve.

Involve Your Child's Interests

Reading doesn't have to mean novels and classic literature. There are so many different types of books and even reading material that there is bound to be something your child will love. This summer, show them how they can combine their interests and reading. For example, if your child loves to watch baking television shows, give them a recipe book and allow them to experiment with it in the kitchen. If your child like superhero movies, introduce them to graphic novels and encourage them to write their own.
