How to Prepare a Successful Class Presentation

If your child isn't a fan of public speaking, then a class presentation can seem like the worst assignment ever. Before they get stressed out and overwhelmed, help them prepare their best presentation yet with these tips from The Tutoring Center, McKinney.

Prepare a Visual Aid

If your child will need a visual aid for their presentation, projecting slides is a great option. Of course, their slides should follow certain rules so that they're effective. To start, have your child limit the amount of text they include on each slide. Not only will too much text be visually unappealing, but it can also tempt your child to read their slides to the class rather than present the information to them. The text they do use should be large enough for everyone to read and should be written in a font that is legible. Be sure your child sticks to colors that complement each other so that no one has to strain to read their slides. Finally, encourage your child to include images, charts, and graphs on their slides so that their information is more visual.

Give Your Presentation Structure

If your child is having a hard time getting started, help them sort their presentation into three main sections: an introduction, the body, and a conclusion. Their introduction should explain their topic briefly and lead into their first body section. The body will be the longest part and can be broken down into the most important main ideas your child wants to cover. These should also include supporting details that help explain things more thoroughly. Finally, their conclusion should bring everything to a smooth close so that they don't end their presentation abruptly.

Practice Presenting With an Audience

If your child is more stressed out about the public speaking part of their presentation, some practice will do them good.  Gather your family and sit down to watch your child present their work. Be attentive and give your child feedback so that they can improve their presentation. Give them a chance to practice it a few times so that they can learn their information and get comfortable with the idea of speaking to an audience.
